2005 SP2 Database Services failure

I applied SP2 to my XP box and am getting a Failure on the Database Services
component. Everything else went fine. I have protocols Shared Memory, Named
Pipes (turned off trying to resolve failure) and TCP/IP enabled. VIA is
disabled. The only 2 services prior to SP2 install running are the Main
Server process & Sql Browser - both are set to localsystem account.
I have included the error from "View Summary."
It talks about a connection getting closed.
Any help would be apprecieated.
Thanks, Glen

I am not sure why the connection was forced to close, if you are running AV
software you may want to suspend it during the installation, but then I
would expect you to be having problems with this during your normal use if
that was the case!!

>|||Hi,
I understand that your SQL Server 2005 SP2 setup program failed due to the
TCP provider error.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.
For further research, I would like to collect the following information
from you:
1. Your SQL Server 2005 SP2 setup log files which are located in
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix;
2. Your SQL error logs which are located in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL(.x)\MSSQL\LOG.
Please first mail me (changliw_at_microsoft_dot_com) an email response and
then I will create a public workspace for your uploading your files.
Also I would like to ask you two questions:
1. Could your SQL Server database service be started with TCP protocol now?
You can first check which TCP ports are configured for your SQL Server from
SQL Server Configuration Manager. After that, run "netstat -nba
>C:\Tcpport.log" from command line to check which TCP port your SQL Server
is listening.
2. Can you connect to your SQL Server instance at your client via
sqlcmd.exe?
For example: sqlcmd -Stcp:<servername>\<instancename> -E
3. What is the edition of your SQL Server 2005?
Look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Charles Wang

2005 SP 1 Install Failure Solution - Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file

This is posted for others who have
If this error occurs here is what worked for me. I hope it may work for you
but am not sure.
In my case I had SQL Express 2005 Installer on my system as well as I run
both (one for development, one for production).
Shut down all SQL related services manually.
I set registry permissions on Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
to include the account that is doing the install with Full Control. Click
Advanced and make sure everything is selected.
I downloaded and ran the SQL Install Cleanup and removed the SQL 2005 Setup
Files Installer and the SQL Express Installer. I then reinstalled the SQL
Setup Files (ONLY!!!!!) from my SQL Server 2005 CD. If you don't don't do
this you won't be able to use the SP.

I then reinstalled the SP and it worked.
Hope this helps somebody.
Special thanks to Peter Yang of Microsoft for his invaluable assistance on
this issue.

2005 Management Studio: Jobs Details (summary page)

I'm missing the info I got from EM on jobs, in the summary page, e.g. when a
job was last run, success/failure, scheduled, enabled, etc.
I don't see any way to add these columns on the summary page in Managment
Studio, am I missing something, or is this info not available there?
Thanks
Tom

Tom,
Go to Object Explorer - SQL Server Agent - Jobs. Here you can right
click on the job and get the job history, properties etc. Pretty much
the same as you're used to on EM but it looks a bit different.

Name - Name of the job.
Enabled - Whether the job is enabled (yes) or not enabled (no).
Status - Current status of the job.
Last Run Outcome - Job status when last run.
Last Run - Date and time job was last run.
Next Run - Date and time the job is next scheduled to run.
Category - The job category assigned to the job.
Runnable - Yes if the job can be run; No if the job cannot be run.

2005 April CTP Install Failure

SQL Server Setup could not conect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft}{SQL Native Client} Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log File" in SQL Server Books Online.

That is the error when attempting to install to W2003 running as a VPC2004 guest OS. The framework and VS Beta 2 are installed and functional.

During setup I recall no configuration option that required the use of Named Pipes. For the most part I used all default settings during install.

The following is all I could find in the log...

MSI (s) (D8:9C) [15:19:14:137]: Note: 1: 1708
MSI (s) (D8:9C) [15:19:14:137]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP -- Installation failed.
The error message also implies an instance of SQL Server could not be found when the install apparently attempted to make a connection but the reference to the number 2 in brackets is confusing, e.g. [2].

When SQL Native Client copies over the legacy registry hive it doesn't enable shared memory. During installation of SQL Server 2005 the SQL Setup program uses the SQL Native Client to connect to the newly installed database instance using shared memory. Since shared memory is not enabled setup fails to connect.

Work Around
When setup encounters this error the error dialog contains a "retry" button.
1) Open Regedit
2) Navigate to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsost\MSSQLServer\Client\SNI9.0
3) Open the key ProtocolOrder, you should see the values tcp and np
4) Add "sm" to the begining to the reg key value. The reg key should look like this after editing:
sm
tcp
np
5) Save the changes to the reg key
6) Go back to SQL setup and click "Retry". Setup should finish installing

No joy yet. The registry hack enabled the install to proceed but now chokes when trying to install "Workstation Components..." with the following...

Error reading from file: F:\My DOwnloads\~Application Vendors\Microsoft\SQL Server\SQL Server 2005 CTP - April 2005 - Developer Edition\SQLDEV\Setup\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Profiler\TraceDefinitions\1033\Microsoft Data Transformation Services TraceDescriptions 9.0.0.xml. Windows Installer only supports installing from paths up to 255 characters. You path is 262. I suggest you create a share to it that shortens the path.

Dan

As it turns out I moved the entire SQLDEV directory from the network share and put it into the root of the drive where I was attempting to install. The install then proceeded without a single problem of any kind. Thanks for hanging in there with me Dan I had forgotten about that little 'gotcha.'

|||That's not actually the cause of this error (I've just come across it too..) the real problem is that the file exists but MS had missed the .xml extension on this particular file. Locate it and add .xml to the end and the install works okay|||Changing the registry key was not easy as you mentioned. When I added sm in front of tcp np, I kept getting a bunch of sqaure box characters. How do I enter them properly.
Thank you.
