2K Developer Edition Install
I've just reached the end of my frustration with trying to learn MSDE with no interface (in addition to simultaneously learning ASP.NET), so I'm going to install 2K Developer Edition. However, I'd like to know if it's safe install it on top of MSDE. I'm currently running XP Pro, VS.NET, IIS 5.x, so I'm afraid that if I have uninstall MSDE that I'll break a bunch things that I've painstakingly configured. ;-)
Advice?
TIA,
BobI'd detach the database(s) you've created, and tuck them away for safekeeping. Once you get the developer edition installed, reattach them (and maybe fix any SQL login/user mappings using sp_change_users_login (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/tsqlref/ts_sp_ca-cz_8qzy.asp)).
-PatP|||MSDE only supports named instance, if I am not mistaken. This means that your new install will also have a named instance. If you want to live with it, - then start double-clicking on setup. Otherwise remove MSDE install completely. I wouldn't keep it even if you're trying to learn it. There's nothing to learn other than the fact that it has the highest number of limitations among all editions.
2col. with data in diff. sequence ref. same column in different table
I need some help Please!!
I'm having trouble creating a view that will give me the informaiton that i need correctly. I listed all the tables and the view that I tried but it's not working I dont think i have the view right.
Here is some info to help you understand what I'm trying to get:
Examples of the data that I'm having trouble with
only conscerns two of the tables
CREATE TABLE TDrivers
(
intDriverID INTEGER NOT NULL, <---
strFirstName VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
strMiddleName VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
strLastName VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
strAddress VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
strCity VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
strState VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
strZipCode VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL,
strPhoneNumber VARCHAR(14) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT TDriveres_PK PRIMARY KEY (intDriverID)
)
CREATE TABLE TScheduledRoutes
(
intRouteID INTEGER NOT NULL,
intScheduleTimeID INTEGER NOT NULL,
intBusID INTEGER NOT NULL,
intDriverID INTEGER NOT NULL, <Both ref above table
intAlternateDriverID INTEGER NOT NULL, <Both ref above table
CONSTRAINT TScheduleRoutes_PK PRIMARY KEY (intRouteID,intScheduleTimeID)
)
TDrivers Table has
intDriverID 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and each id is associated with a name
1 = john
2 = mike
3 = sam
4 = jim
5 = tony
TScheduledRoutes Table
has column
intDriverID
and data is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 that references TDrivers.intDriverID
and has column
intAlternateDriverID
and data is 5, 3, 1, 2, 4 that references TDrivers.intDriverID also
NOTICE the two have different sequence.
I need to get a select statement that would give me a list of
TScheduledRoutes.intDriverID full name
and their assciated alternate driver
TScheduledRoutes.intAlternateDriverID
output would give this as example
(intdriverID 1) john would have alt driverId 5 tony
I can't create a select statement that will give me both names at the same time.
Below is a list of the actual code and the view I cant get to do what I want it to and still keep the database in 3rd normal form.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2008 RS hosting info?
Is there any other resources besides the one below that I can use to learn more about the RS 2008 "IIS" hosting implications? In particular, how does this new approach compare and contrast to RS 2005 custom security/forms authentication approaches?
Thanks for any more info
teo's insights:
http://prologika.com/CS/blogs/blog/archive/2007/08/04/the-perfect-host.aspx
At this point I don't know if there is much online resources on this topic. For your questions: forms auth is supported like in IIS/ASP.NET. Anything that's an ASP.NET feature is pretty much unchanged. However, if you had IIS security extensions like some of the single sign on solutions, then you need to find other solutions. I think you can port the extensions to ISA server, but I am not sure if this has been tested yet.Tuesday, March 6, 2012
2005: Business Intelligence Development Studio?
I am learning SQLServer 2005 Express Edition. I wanted to learn Report
Designer which - according to my tutorial book - is part of Business
Intelligence Development Studio. I can't find it in Internet. Could
you help me plase?
Thank you very much!
/RAM/It only comes with Express Advanced Services and not Express, they are both
free.

2005 Express
in my SQLExpress install. I see docs that say to look under managment in
MS's Object Explorer, but I don't see anything under there but the logs and
the Activity Monitor.
Nor do I see anything thing specific on the Microsoft download page. I
installed Install "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition" and "SQL
Server Management Studio Express", but not advanced services.
JayThere is no SQL Server Agent in Express Edition.
For more information SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, you may want to see

Agent is not included with Express.

David Portas|||Jay,
SQL Agent does not come with SQL Server Express. You can use the Windows
Scheduler and SQLCMD to run SQL Jobs according to schedule. And of course,
people are writing code to fill the hole. For $79 the following solution is
being offered: http://www.valesoftware.com/products-express-agent.php

figure out how to get/enable it.
I assume that in the full versions, it works pretty much just like it does
in 2000 EM?
I also assume that to see it in MS (connected to a 2005 instance), you have
to be a admin on that machine.

You don't need to be an admin to see SQL Agent on a non-Express SQL Server
2005, but you do need some rights. You can look up msdb fixed database
roles:
SQLAgentUserRole
SQLAgentReaderRole
SQLAgentOperatorRole
Rights increase as you proceed down the list.

While what you say sounds reasonable, what I am seeing doesn't match.
I connected to our 2005 Standard Edition server using my rather limited
account and I do not see "Maintenance Plans" under the Managment tree.
However, when I checked it with the guy doing admin on that box, he does
have "Maintenance Plans" listed.
I supose this doesn't really matter, as I'll have full assess on that
machine shortly. What I don't (and need to know) is how to use it. I'm
hoping that it is a simple as 2000 SQLagent.

Today I realized that, if you do not have sysadmin server fixed role,
Maintanence Tasks node does not appear under Management in SSMS.
It's quite easy to use it. Don't worry.
Maybe the following link helps for a start.
