2005: SIMPLE QUESTION: error log

Hello,
When I received a message "... See the SQL Server errorlog for details
..." I opened Management / SQL Server Logs where I see:
Current - 2006-05-30 12:19:00
Archive #1 - 2006-05-30 09:49:00
Archive #2 - 2006-05-30 08:27:00
etc.
But each of these logs contains "0 Item(s)". How to see log entries?
Thank you very much

You did double-click on the error log in the list, did you?

You should be able to see log entries this way, but it could be some
permissions issue.

Also make sure that you have no filter active.

Hi RAM,

Have you tried right-clicking the log and selecting "View SQL Server
Log"?

(Double-clicking the title works too)

2005 SP2 woes

Hello,

I've run into a problem trying to install SP2 for SQL2005 on a Server 2003 system. I tried to troubleshoot this myself but the logs are just not verbose enough. The box was just rebuilt with Server 2003, then SP2 for 2003 was immediately applied. SQL2005 was then installed. In my attempt to install SP2 for SQL2005, the following errors occured:

2005 install - Can you specify a directory for the data and one for the logs?

Hi,
I am setting up a template.ini file that I am going to use for some
unattended installs of SQL Server 2005. I believe using the
'INSTALLSQLDATADIR' I can get the system databases setup with their
data files and log in the directory I specify. Is there a way to
specify a location for the logs and a location for the data files?I don't think so. There is really not much a need for that either.

Your system tables should have very little I/O against them, and good
backups will protect you from losing them...

2005 Failover Cluster SAN drives best practices

> What is the best practice to move the logs onto
> another spindle? Do I have to just create another LUN?
You should at least put yout transaction log files on a separate LUN from
your data LUN. This doesn't guarantee that your data and log would be placed
on separate spindles inside SAN because both LUNs can be carved from the sam
e
set of disks, but at least it gives you some separation.

> I am about to add a few more instances.
> Does each one need to have it's own LUN?
Each clustered instance will be implemented a separate cluster resource
group with its own disk resource(s). Since you can't have the same read/writ
e
disk as two separate disk resources in different resource groups, each
clustered instance needs its own LUN.

> There is a limited amount of drive letters that I can create. Is there
> a way to share a LUN between instances?
You can't really share drive letters. But SQL2005 fully supports mounted
volumes in a cluster. These volumes don't have to be assigned separate drive
letters. As long as they are made disk resources, and are mounted under a
root drive letter, you can have multiple volumes in a resource group (or an
instance) with as few as one drive letter per instance.

First, I am not sure I have setup my existing default instance the best
way for my cluster. I currently only have one 'Physical Disk' in the
cluster group which is a LUN on our SAN. Both the data files and log
files are stored there. What is the best practice to move the logs onto

I am about to add a few more instances. Does each one need to have it's

There is a limited amount of drive letters that I can create. Is there
a way to share a LUN between instances? I seem to remember reading a
feature of 2005 that was related to this but, for the life of me, I
cannot find it again.
